A gala celebrating the first of a series of a monthly rotating art exhibitions at the new Broadmoor Community Center (part of the new Rosa Keller Library). Located at the corner of Fountainbleu and Napolean Aves. (4300 South Broad St.)

All art will be for sale and a portion of the proceeds will support future art exhibits.

as we approach cinco de mayo, and wedding season among other things, I am working diligently towards a bunch of wedding DOD pieces. the one above was gifted to DANDREA aka dan and andrea, who got married last weekend! andrea’s last name is bacon, hence the frying pan and flames. dan, with a side of bacon, out of the frying pan and into the fire of marraige! congrats to both of you.

this weekend, a new gallery opens in the french quarter, next to the artist co op. (el gato negro right next door) ANYHOW, I’ve been asked to participate in this wonderful opportunity, so I’ll have the wildman painting for sale there, and katrina as well. In the near future, I will be a staple in this spot, and look forward to meeting and greeting all walks of life, in the historic french quarter.

goodbye hi ho lounge!

its been fun , but things have changed. the sale of the hi ho to the stooges brass band? is a good move, but I cannot move with it. The first order of change was to remove my art, and not even call me. John called and I raced over to get all my belongings, and remove my art. A barrage of questions followed, of which, I kind of answered , but didn’t completely answer. I can see whats coming. I answer, nothing but questions for weeks and then find myself unemployed. So I thought it best that I leave for good.

I slammed a door shut, and immediately new doors opened! Imagine that! First and foremost, I’ll be joining the artists in the artist co op in the french quarter. Most likely even take a shift or two, selling art supplies, and then some, also, will be the opening artist for jazzfest.

I make my return this weekend at surrey’s as an employee, and also showing art there as well. All the works you saw for an entire four days? and the treme shoot? will be at surrey’s at 1418 magazine. I am sad to be gone from this institution that I have worked so hard to make home, but at the same time? glad to walk away.

my affirmation within hours of this new news? was a gift upon my bicycle seat in the quarter. the universe approves!

YAY! back into season three of treme. I so look forward to being an extra, and look even more forward to some new art I’ve hung at the hi ho for the episode of mardigras day, and morning forty federation LIVE at the hi ho. Last year? I managed to do the st ann shot, at the river, and bourbon street, and also worked with the hi ho for shots with Steve Zahn and more. Its going to be a great day, and here’s a sample of some of the new art hanging at the hi ho for season three.

portland = pdx

after a four day hiatus in the northwest, I am back in town to recover. Parents grow old, and children too, but there comes a time when the child becomes the adult, and this is where I’m at. My mom is up there, and stepfather even MORE up there. They live together, and are growing old together, so the golden years advance.

however, this trip? they both seem to be there, but in need of helping hands. So my goal this month is to provide that, and make sure they’re living comfortably. My other family members had other ideas, like removing them from their home, and shoving them in an old folks home. NOT what my mother wanted in her old age.

So thus begins the journey of caring for the elderly, only they are MY elderly parents. When I appeared on the door step? they had no idea I was coming. This isn’t the first time I’ve appeared unnannounced, and won’t be the last time. I’ve learned that by not announcing yourself? they are more appreciative, and caring. They also don’t have time to clean, so you can see whats going on.

Portland has a recycle program, which is great, but they didn’t take into consideration how taxing this is on the elderly. My mom is so perplexed that the stuff never makes it outside, and she has no clue when pick up is, as its every TWO weeks. Here at home? twice a week. Its a ridiculous notion to tax elderly with this worry. The oregonian may still get a letter from me.

Watching my mom deal with my stepdad? Bless her heart. He would drive me nuts, which is why a nurse is needed for her. She’s the caregiver? WOW. anyhow, some 21 loads of laundry, and constant dish washing, and garbage patrol, combined with repetitive stories of WW2? was a challenge. At first patient, then later? I got annoyed. If you know any healthcare workers? HUG THEM. what they do? is provide stability, and love to those who grow old, and sometimes have forgotten who they are.

here’s to my mom. I’ll be back mom, and we’ll get it all worked out!

hello Okeanos….. and Skinz n Bonez

this is quite a week, and tonite, is my last moment of calm, relaxation, and home. come tomorrow? muses, practice, and more, then friday the same again, saturday? facepainting friends for moms ball, starting at ten am, and then flow into the afternoon, and get a good nights sleep, for the next day? is OKEANOS. the bonez are quite excited. we have a great game plan, and a line of secondline umbrellas, a line of drums, a line of soul sweepers, dancers, flag, spy, wild, and 504. We will look great… and we’re all excited. I know I’ll be beat afterwards… but I’ll be so excited, and filled with so much revelry, and energy from all those folks who are screaming at you!

We are going to try and double back for BOW, but like I said? it just depends on my energy level. six miles to parade? is the longest parade I’ve ever done, and I haven’t done it yet. HAH… however, I’m sure that it will all be fun, and exhausting. I look forward to Wani, and Howard being with me, and can’t wait to see how we are received.

Come Monday? sleep, rest, and then come tuesday? we are up and out the door at five am, to wake up friends, and clang, and do a tradition, thats been around since the 1700′s… for us? our first time. http://www.chrisbickford.com/wp/2010/02/24/the-bone-gang/

I am pleased to say that I’ll be rolling in Okeanos this mardigras season. I haven’t had the chance to roll in an uptown parade, so the experience is going to be fun, and a LONG walk. It suddenly is upon us, and tonite? Mr Kim and I went to the Okeanos coronation ball, and it was quite the show. LOTS of smiles, good cheer, maids, maidens, QUEEN, KING and CAPTAIN, lieutenants, riders, krewes, blinky cowgirl hats, and gummy bears!

Yes, it sounds a bit strange, but when it comes to mardigras? there’s always a surprize, and then some. I just joined this krewe, with Skinz N Bonez, we will be marching with them come Feb 19th, first parade of the day! Joining us will be maracatu from NY, and look for us with a colorful mayan theme.

Now lets get to the gras! Skinz N Bonez will roll in krewedelusion on february fourth, right behind krewe du vieux. the ball this year? is at the “four corners” of st claude, respectfully, hi ho lounge, siberia, allways and kajuns pub. one cover charge gets you into all four clubs, and the hi ho lounge will be featuring ratty scurvix and oops da clown on trapeze. this is a show you won’t soon forget, so get dressed in costume, and join the fun.

skinz n bonez will be all over the place this gras, watching parades, and flash mob’n clubs. we roll again with kids, in Okeanos parade uptown on feb 19th! parade start time is 11am! look for us with a fabulous addition of a drum core band in town for big chief donald harrison. us bonez be stylin with this new groove!

We will be out and about for muses, krewe d’etat, 610 stompers parade with chewbacchus, and then taking lundi gras off, to wake up early for mardigras morning. We are picking TEN only to wake up, and if your chosen, or would like to be chosen? you need to talk to us now! those chosen will get special throws, and a gift, created by skinz n bonez!

later in the day? we’ll cross over with st ann, krewe of pyrates, backstreet cultural museum, the baby dolls, and big chief of the northside skull and bonez, bruce “sunpie” barnes. see you out there!

it was a wonderful weekend, with the Big Nine SA and PC coming out of the hi ho lounge on sunday. followed by skinz n bonez, and then followed by a skinz n bonez christmas party and saints game.

The secret santa skellie gift swap was down and dirty, and some of the gifts were beyond expectations. we had the bottle of pyrat rum, the silver drum, the skull head, the bracelets, the ornaments, hats, and all kinda goodness. Breakfast was just as fantastic, as everyone brought out all kinds of good foods to munch upon.

We then mosey’d over to the christmas caroling in jackson square, and then on to nog and log at the allways lounge. it was a long day, but one filled with all kinds of boney love.

happy holidaze

this month is filled with all kinds of goodness. lets begin with one of my favorite things, the nola rising toys for tots party at the hi ho lounge on december 11th.

titled “its yours take it”, reaches another year, where you donate toys, and walk away with art. hundreds of artists donate to this, and to boot? celebrity bartender lou lou the muse is in the house, Razor of Complexity as the DJ, and many local artists have booths so you can xmas shop. it begins at noon, address is 2239 st claude avenue. I’ll be there, just like last year, to watch the smiles as we collect toys for tots.

december 18th? is a great day too, as Big Nine Social Aid and Pleasure club come out of the hi ho lounge for their yearly parade. this year? Skinz N Bonez sponsers with a potluck breakfast party, and xmas gig to boot. be there early, as this parade rolls round ten am, then returns later in the day for some holiday fun. secret santa skellie as well, you make it, wrap it, and we then exchange gifts. all welcome.

then of course there’s Surrey’s on magazine street, and a fabulous showing of local artists, including myself, crystal shelton and elsie semmes, and will smith jr. get to surrey’s, both locations this holiday season, and support local artists.

FIRE on spain street. a call out to nola and beyond.

A two-alarm fire gutted a home containing five apartments in Faubourg Marigny Sunday night.

Firefighters climb into a home containing five apartments at the corner of Spain Street and Dauphine Street while responding to a Sunday-night blaze.

No one was injured in the blaze but seven tenants who live in the complex at the corner of Spain Street and Dauphine Street were left homeless. The apartments, part of a converted home that was two stories on Spain Street and a single story on Dauphine Street, were left badly damaged, with siding burned away and little remaining unscathed inside.

The fire started at the wall between two of the units on Dauphine Street about 9:40 p.m., though the exact cause of the blaze was under investigation Sunday night, Acting Deputy Chief Chris Mickal said.

Madison Chomsky said she saw the fire as she was walking by the apartments. Chomsky called 9-1-1 and knocked on doors of apartments in the area to warn residents, she said.

Six fire engines, three ladder trucks and several chiefs and special units from the Third District responded to the blaze and had it under control by 10:30 p.m., Mickal said. Dauphine remained clogged with trucks and firefighters who were spraying the house from both inside and from the road until past 11 p.m.
